When Discouragement Distorts the Truth

I was listening to Dr. David Jeremiah a few days ago, and something he said stopped me in my tracks: “Discouragement selects its own facts.”

That simple statement carries so much truth.

He was speaking about Elijah-a man who had just witnessed the undeniable power of God move mightily through his life. Fire fell from heaven. Victory was clear. God had proven Himself faithful again and again.

Yet, all it took was one threatening word from Jezebel, and Elijah ran. He hid in a cave, overcome with fear and discouragement.

Why?

Because discouragement has a way of rewriting the narrative in our minds. It causes us to ignore the evidence of God’s faithfulness and focus only on what feeds our fear. It selects the facts that support defeat and silences the truth that declares victory.

Even when we know God has brought us through before….Even when we know His promises are true….In moments of discouragement, we can find ourselves believing the very lies we would normally reject.

That’s the danger.

Discouragement doesn’t come to inform us-it comes to distort. It whispers, “You’re alone,” when God has said He will never leave you. It says, “You wont make it,” when God has already declared your victory. It magnifies the problem and minimizes the power of God.

But here’s the good news: just because discouragement selects its own facts doesn’t mean we have to accept them.

We can choose truth.

We can remind ourselves of what God has already done. We can rehearse His promises instead of our fears. We can step out of the cave and back into the light of His presence.

Elijah may have had a moment of weakness, but God didn’t leave him there-and He won’t leave you there either.

So the next time discouragement tries to tell you its version of the story, pause and ask yourself: Is this what I feel, or is this what I know to be true?

Hold on to what you know.

God is still faithful.

God is still present.

And no lie of discouragement can override the truth of His Word.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, I come before You with a sincere heart, trusting that You hear me when I pray.

Help me when I get discouraged to focus on your Word and truth. You are not a man that You should lie-what You said, You will do.

When lies come, help me not to believe them, but to hold on to Your truth and stay strong.

Thank your for keeping me when I feel like hiding. Strengthen me and sustain me with Your Word.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
