Seek First His Kingdom: Trust God for Today and Tomorrow

Matthew 6:25-34

Key Verse: Matthew 6:33

But first and most important, seek, aim at, strive after His Kingdom and His righteousness, His way of doing and being right, the attitude and character of God, and all these things will be given to you also.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Have you ever found yourself worrying about what tomorrow will bring? Have you ever been concerned about your finances, your job, what you will eat, what you will drink, or what you will wear? Sometimes, we become so consumed with the natural things of this world that we lose sight of the One who holds our lives in His hands. In Matthew 6:25-33, Jesus teaches us not to worry about our lives or become consumed by our daily needs. He asks us an important question: Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Of course we must take care of ourselves and fulfill our responsibilities. God has not called us to neglect our responsibilities. However, we must be careful not to allow our concerns about everyday life to consume our thoughts, and steal our peace, and take our focus away from Him.

God wants us to trust Him rather than live in constant worry. Jesus tells us to look at the birds of the air. They do not sow, reap, or gather into barns, yet our Heavenly Father feeds them. Then Jesus asks, aren’t you worth much more than they are? Think about that for a moment. If God takes care of the birds, how much more will He take care of you, His beloved creation? Worrying cannot add a single hour to our lives. It cannot change yesterday, and it cannot give us control over tomorrow. So why do we allow worry to take up so much room in our hearts?

Jesus reminds us that our Heavenly Father knows what we need. We do not have to live as though we have been forgotten or abandoned. Our Father sees us, knows us, and cares for us. Jesus also tells us to consider the lilies of the field and how beautifully God clothes them. Have you ever driven along the highway and noticed the beautiful flowers growing along the roadside? Sometimes, you may look at them and think, wow, how beautiful they are! Who goes out there and plants them? God allows the flowers to grow and display their beauty. They remind us of His wonderful creation and His attention to even the smallest details. If God clothes the grass of the field and makes the flowers so beautiful, will He not take care of you?

You are worth more than the flowers of the field. You are precious to your Heavenly Father. Do not allow the concerns of this world to make you forget how much He cares for you. Jesus asks, “O you of little faith?” (Matthew 6:30). This is an invitation for us to examine our hearts. Do we truly believe God can take care of us? Do we trust Him when we cannot see how our needs will be met? Faith does not mean we will never face difficult circumstances. It means we can trust God even when we do not have all the answers. Jehovah Jireh-The Lord Is Our Provider. In Matthew 6:31, Jesus tells us not to worry, asking what we will eat, drink, or wear. Our Heavenly Father already knows what we need before we ask Him. He is Jehovah Jireh, the Lord who provides.

When we know our Father in heaven and understand His faithfulness, we can learn to release our worries about food, clothing, employment, and finances into His hands. Philippians 4:19 reminds us: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” What a wonderful promise to hold on to! God knows what you need. He knows the situations you are facing and the concerns you carry in your heart. Even when you do not know how everything will work out, you can continue to trust Him. Remember, trusting God does not mean we sit back and do nothing. We still work, plan, pray, and fulfill our responsibilities. But we do not have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. We can do our part and trust God with what is beyond our control.

Seek First the Kingdom of God. Now we come to the key verse of this passage, Matthew 6:33: “But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This is the key! Jesus is teaching us to put God first. We must seek His Kingdom, pursue His righteousness, and desire to live according to His will and His ways. Instead of allowing worry to become the center of our lives, let us make God the center of our lives. Are we seeking Him through prayer? Are we spending time in His Word? Are we walking in obedience to Him? Are we demonstrating His love and character in the way we treat others?

When we put God first, our priorities begin to change. We learn to trust His wisdom instead of relying only on our own understanding. We learn to seek His will instead of allowing fear to direct our decisions. God knows what we need. Our responsibility is to seek Him, walk in His ways, and trust Him to provide according to His will and wisdom. Matthew 6:34 tells us not to worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will have its own concerns. Each day has enough trouble of its own. We cannot see into tomorrow, but God is already there. Why should we allow tomorrow’s uncertainties to steal the peace God wants us to experience today? We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know the One who holds tomorrow. He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us.

Let us learn to trust Him with our today and our tomorrow. We do not have to figure everything out at once. We can take each day as it comes, trusting that God will give us the grace and strength we need. Pray instead of worrying. Philippians 4:6-7 teaches us not to be anxious about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, to present our requests to God. Notice that the Word tells us to bring everything before God. Do not stop praying. Do not stop bringing your concerns to your Heavenly Father. Be specific in your prayers. Tell Him what is troubling you, what you need, and what you are trusting Him to do. Pray with thanksgiving, remembering His faithfulness and the ways He has brought you through difficult seasons before.

We can approach God with confidence, knowing that He hears us. We may not always receive the answer we expect or see our circumstances change immediately, but God can give us His peace in the midst of what we are facing. Philippians 4:7 speaks of the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. That is the peace we need! A peace that does not depend on everything going our way. A peace that remains with us even when we do not understand what God is doing. Rest in the assurance that you can bring your burdens to Him. You do not have to face them alone. As we grow in faith, let us also grow in love. Let us remember that seeking God’s Kingdom is not only about what we receive from Him; it is also about becoming the people He has called us to be.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for Your Word and for reminding us that we do not have to live in worry and fear. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the concerns of this world to consume our thoughts and take our focus from you. Lord, teach us to seek Your Kingdom and Your righteousness first. Help us to trust You with our finances, our employment, our families, our health, and every situation we face. When we are anxious about tomorrow, remind us that You hold our future in Your hands. Give us the faith to trust You even when we cannot see the way forward. Help us to pray with thanksgiving, to rest in Your peace, and to walk in obedience to Your Word.

Father, grow our faith, strengthen our hope, and fill our hearts with Your love. Help us to forgive others, show compassion, and reflect Your character in all that we do. Thank You for being Jehovah Jireh, our Provider. We place our concerns before You and trust You to guide us according to Your perfect will.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
